Hospital faces £350,000 fine over Legionella incidents

The Safety & Heath Practitioner (SHE) reports that a large hospital trust is being fined £350,000 over two Legionella incidents. One of the incidents led to a patient fatality from contracting Legionella's Disease. On 3 September 2013 Chelmsford Crown Court heard that a legionella investigation by the HSE found the Trust had failed to monitor the hot and cold water systems adequately or ensure key parts of the system, such as shower heads and hoses, were kept clean. Free Legionella Event

Bradford Area Occupational Health & Safety Forum are holding a free seminar on Legionella at The Banqueting Suite at Bradford City Hall. The event will be held on 12th March and will start at 9.30am and finish at 12.30. Speakers will include the Health Protection Agency, a Local Authority Environmental Health Officer and a speaker from RPS Group's Legionella Consultancy Team. New HSE interventions on Legionnaires' Disease

HSE recently completed a review of Legionnaires' disease outbreaks over the past ten years that reveals common failings in control, and a potential risk of further legionella outbreaks, such as those in Edinburgh and Stoke in 2012. The review highlighted a range of failures e.g.: departures from planned maintenance schedules (allowing plant conditions to get worse, and longer periods for problems to develop); changes in the process (leading to changes in the risks, or rendering existing precautions...

HSE Legionella Safety Notice

This month the HSE is encouraging companies to re-check and ensure hot and cold water systems are not a legionella risk. In particular Leisure Centres with spa pools, and Care Homes are among the businesses being urged to do more to protect workers and members of the public from legionella risks.
