HS2 has named the successful bidders for key engineering and environmental consultancy work for phase two of the £33bn high-speed rail project. The winners include Mott MacDonald who were awarded both the environmental and engineering framework packages. Business leaders in Birmingham and the West Midlands today urged the government to stand firm on plans for a high speed rail link between Birmingham and London. But they were unperturbed that the HS2 project, which will reportedly create 22,000 sustainable jobs in the West Midlands alone, was not included in the Queen's Speech. The government has launched its consultation on the proposed high-speed rail line from London to Birmingham. The route would cut journey times to about 50 minutes, with work due to begin in 2015 if the plan is approved. However, there are opponents to the High Speed Line (HS2) who argue that the £17bn scheme will be a waste of money and that updating the existing West Coast mainline would be a better investment.
