Knowledge Management

We are entering the new financial year with Mr. Gordon Brown recognizing that although Britain is amongst the most successful of the richest seven industrial economies, our productivity as measured by output per worker lags behind rivals like the USA and France. Tax measures are rumoured to be in place to encourage the investment of major Organisations in intellectual property, or, in terms we understand, knowledge bases from which to run the enterprise. The Sunday Times reports that knowledge is now overtaking products as a top earner in the US, earning around £26b in licensing and royalties compared to £29b from aircraft sales. 'The shift towards the knowledge economy is well known' so any tax breaks in the UK should be welcome news.

To make knowledge management work, Organisations need to extract the years of experience from longer term employees and place the information in a place and in a format that can be readily accessed by those who are less experienced or absent minded. Making this actually happen however, is in our experience, no mean achievement. Senior personnel are justifiably reluctant to 'share' their knowledge and experience ‘with the organisation’ as they often feel that it diminishes their own worth. So how will Gordon Brown help organisations tease this valuable information from key personnel?

This is clearly an issue that is certainly not going to go away. We would welcome the opportunity to further the debate in the health & safety environment. Our new ToolKit CS™ Compliance System has all the tools required to manage knowledge and we look forward to providing our new tool for that application area as an extension to our health & safety applications.
