Conference 2017 Speaker Synopses

We are exceedingly happy to announce that we will be running a prestigious Health and Safety event on Tuesday 13th June 2017. We are looking forward to some healthy debating from our speakers and attendees. So, as usual, we will have a fabulous line up of speakers who will be providing you with valuable health and safety information.

Dave Carr, PgD, MIIRSM, DiPSM, RFaPS
Managing Director

Dave has had a varied career, having started as a Marine Engineering Artificer in the Royal Navy and subsequently working in the topsides and subsea construction and maintenance of North Sea oil and gas installations. During this period Dave performed many roles, including planning engineer, fabrications engineer, construction manager, quality assurance manager and technical author for health and safety management systems.
Dave also worked in the water and manufacturing industries before joining Callsafe in 1996 as a health & safety consultant. Dave became Managing Director in May 2004. Dave obtained a Post-graduate Diploma in Health and Safety Management in 2006, achieved Fellowship of the Association for Project Safety (APS) in 2007 and is a Registered Principal Designer with the APS. Callsafe Services offer health and safety training and carry out the Principal Designer role for many large and complex projects, including works for the Environmental Agency.
At the Ai Solutions Health and Safety Conference 2017 as well as providing the update for the HSE, Dave will be telling us how BIM and CDM can work together.
Frank Sheppard

Frank Sheppard is the director of the Lead Paint Safety Association. An organisation dedicated to raising awareness of the serious health issues caused by the dust and particles emanating from Lead Paint. The position currently held is a culmination of several roads travelled through the course of his life. From starting out as a shop assistant in a builder's merchants to today Director of the Lead Paint Safety Association. Frank was approached to get involved in this project because of the experience he has gained from the industries he has been involved in.
As an Indentured apprentice electrician progressing to qualified lift engineer in construction. To working in customer service roles being actively involved in trade unions, (Senior Convenor at the Re-Construction of the New Wembley Stadium) Health and safety, Employment Law, Education. Mentoring and advising community groups and related organisations on issues relevant to their situation.
These uniquely different scenarios and positions have collectively contributed to his skill base giving him the confidence and knowledge to take on this role and be instrumental in promoting awareness of the particularly extreme adverse effects Lead Paint can have and has had and is having on the most vulnerable groups such as young children pregnant women and members of the Afro-Caribbean community and has been quoted by some construction Industry leaders as being "the new Asbestos."
At the Ai Solutions Health and Safety Conference 2017 Frank will be highlighting the hazards of lead in the construction environment.
Lara Ayris, MSC (hons) Environmental, BSc (hons) Earth Sciences, CIWM

Lara founded WPS in November 2009, with a view to helping a few local construction companies with their SWMPs, but soon gathered a reputation for solving waste management problems. WPS kept growing, receiving the small business of the year award 2011 from emcbe. As a personal recognition of her achievements to the industry, Lara was voted Outstanding Woman in Construction 2012.
Since that time, WPS has expanded to become The Specialist Compliance Consultancy in the construction industry, offering services to assist satisfying planning conditions, s106 agreements, obtain credits for BREEAM and high scores in CCS in addition to their original online SWMP tool "Wasteplan".
Lara was also successful in obtaining an Innovate Grant for DRIM (Deconstruction and Recovery Information Module) as part of a syndicate including the Universities of West England and Coventry as well as another SME. She now manages the DRIM project.
At the Ai Solutions Health and Safety Conference 2017 Lara will be telling us all about the positive impact of environmental legislation.
Paul Vermont, BEng, MISTC

Watson & Sole are leading providers of technical documentation solutions for the construction industry. Paul joined Watson & Sole in 1985 after completing his apprenticeship with a Services Contractor. Since then Paul has worked his way through the business until he and his business partner bought the Company form the original founder back in 2005. The traditional paper copies of the Manuals that were produced typically for Contractors back in the early days has now been superseded by a web based intelligent document solution (INTELI-SCAN) that manages the project documentation process from project commencement through to practical completion. In addition the application is then provided to the building owner, occupier and facilities team in order to assist with the day to day running of the building. INTELI-SCAN is the project portal for the various CDM/ project documents as well as operational documents. INTELI-SCAN was nominated for the Building Awards Specialist Contractor of the Year in 2011.

Dr Steve Taylor, PhD

Steve has over 40 years' experience in the construction industry working within the NHS and local government sectors. Steve headed a county council asbestos unit for 10 years before being promoted to lead a multi-disciplinary team of surveyors and engineers.
Steve has established a training company 'Doctus' with the objective of delivering interesting, engaging and motivational training within the asbestos and CDM areas.
At the Ai Solutions Health and Safety Conference 2017 Steve's session will cover the key areas of CAWR 2012 compliance with some interesting asbestos awareness clips that may be new to you!
Shirley Radford, BSc (hons), NEBOSH Construction

Shirley has worked in the health service and then the health and safety industry for over 20 years. She is a qualified trainer and has particular interest in business information systems to enhance the working environment. Using business process reengineering Shirley uses the software to aid the customer to get the best results as well as streaming their internal systems and processes.
For the past 13 years Shirley has worked for Ai Solutions; who provide health and safety software systems which are aimed at specific legislation. These include Construction (Design and Management) or CDM2015, Asbestos CAW12 and Legionella.
At the Ai Solutions Health and Safety Conference 2017 Shirley will be discussing the current skills shortage within the construction industry.
Simon Hanks, BSc (Hons)

Simon heads up the team at Ai Solutions. He has been a Microsoft .Net Developer since 2004 working in a wide range of industries from Insurance, Telecommunications, Banking, Logistics, Biomedical, and Construction, gaining his Microsoft Professional Developer Certifications in 2010.
He has been Managing Director of Ai Solutions since 2014. Whilst this is a varying role his focus remains heavily on the architecture and innovation of our future products and services.
Simon will be chairing the Health and Safety Conference this year and looks forward to meeting you and hearing your questions and queries about legislation and health and safety.
